Futurama S01E01 Reaction Paper

Futurama is a show created by Matt Groening. The story revolves around Fry who is frozen in cryogenic chamber and finds himself in December 31, 2999. Fry then later meets characters like Leela, Bender and the Professor then have the silliest of adventures. The main plot of the show is to see how Fry adapts to the new era. The pilot episode of Futurama sets it all up by bringing Fry to the future and experience the changes to the world he once new.

The show brought up interesting things about the future like cryogenic sleep, space travel, heads of celebrities and important figures and much more. Seems reminiscent of the future our parents probably expected when they were still younger where science and technology is so advanced that it really differs from what we know today. Shows that the world is continually changing and we still have only scratched the surface of what we really know and understand. Science is young but eventually it will develop. There are so many possibilities that could happen it gets me excited just thinking about it. Would the rate of the development of science though equal the rate of me growing older? I doubt I'll reach this future but maybe I could witness the beginnings of it.

The way Fry went to the future is through cryogenic sleep where he was frozen until a certain date. I wouldn't say it's time travelling but more of a way pausing your life to hopefully wake up to a better future. This idea has been explored in movies but I'm not particularly sure if it's been done as of today. It's not the same way of time travelling where we choose a date and instantly we're there and we can somehow go back. That time travelling helps you witness past and future events but it could have dire consequences when you go back to the future. Cryogenic sleep however it's you who adapt to the changing times because obviously there is no going back.

I'm sure as I watch more Futurama episodes, the science and technology shown in the future would be made more clear and exciting for viewers.

Futurama: Space Pilot 3000 Reaction Paper

25 year-old Phillip Fry, a delivery boy from 1999 was having the WORST day of his life, let alone the worst New Year’s Eve of his life. He died in the video game he was playing, got insulted by a kid, had to work at a job he hates, got his girlfriend and his bike stolen, was informed that his belongings were thrown out into the street while it was raining, and was victimized by pranksters by sending him to a phony address. To borrow a saying from Suzanne Collins’ ‘Hunger Games’, I’d say that the odds were definitely not in his favor. When the New Year arrived, Fry was hardly excited for it. But little did he know that his odds were changing.

Time-travel! What a mysteriously wonderful idea anyone would want to be able to experience. Some would say that Fry time-travelled to the future, but technically, he didn’t. He just accidentally froze himself in the cryogenics pod in the room, stopping his body from changing or aging until 1000 years later, the machine would release him. A lot has happened in a thousand years since he got frozen. Civilization got wiped out by aliens in one of the earlier years. Then it got rebuilt and was ‘better’ than before. Then got wiped out by aliens again. And got rebuilt again. But the most peculiar thing in this span of events is that the building where Fry was located never got vaporized. I’m pretty sure I won’t be getting an answer to that question anytime soon. Sigh, I should really stop questioning fictional stories… or is it one?

Well, yes it is. It is in fact science – fiction. And science fiction, or SciFi, is defined to be “a genre of fiction dealing with imaginative content such as futuristic settings, futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life” (Wikipedia), which pretty much sums up the entirety of Futurama. Sure, you have the typical robots and aliens and futuristic technology, but the show’s version of the future is actually very peculiar. You have a robot (Bender) that acts as a typical drunkard, or in other words, a robot with a personality of its own, and an alien (Leela) that is pretty much human except for her one bulbous eye. Also, the system of society in this future is very systematic, what with each person digitally being assigned a job instead of letting him/her choose a job. I still don’t know what the other aspects of Futurama there are, since I have only watched the pilot episode, but I predict that they are just the usual stuff, like exaggerations of the current society with innovations that are not yet real except in our imaginations, but with an extra ingredient of comedy. Not much of an expectation but that's just my opinion.

Reaction Paper: Space Pilot 3000

Futurama is a sci-fi comedy sitcom which follows the story of a young pizza delivery boy named Philip J. Fry who was cryogenically (low-temperature preservation) frozen for a thousand years. Futurama displayed a not so usual way of time-travelling. Compared to the typical time-travel concept we know, using a time-travel machine and travel through space and time, Futurama’s cryopreservation, though lacking the ability to travel back in time, is more possible and probably will be achieved by humans earlier.

After being in a capsul for a long time, Fry was finally thawed and woke up to a completely new environment, the future. Thinking that he has a second chance and a new start, he was very happy only to find out that he would be a delivery boy again, which was his job in the life he hated one thousand years ago. Before I watched the pilot episode, all I can think of about the future are the advance technologies like flying cars and robots but Futurama has shown some concepts that never crossed my mind. It shows that in the future, society can force who you are as shown by the Fate Assignment but you can also be free at the same time as shown by the suicide booth. The series also exhibited the possible cohabitation of aliens like Leela and super advanced, almost humanly, robot like Bender.

To think that this series was made in 1999, I can say that the producers have a great view of the future. They have a different view, more realistic, compared to the usual robot-technology-spaceship view of the future. Futurama does not only tackle the future setting, it also tackles what the society can be in the future. It makes you want to tell yourself, “I won’t let society dictate who I’m gonna be.”

Futurama Reaction Paper

Futurama’s story revolves around a delivery boy in New York named Philip Fry who accidentally slipped into a cryogenic pod that froze him for a thousand years – from the year 1999 to 2999. During that span of 1000 years, many invasions by extra-terrestrial beings equipped with high level of machinery caused changes and upsurge of different civilizations in New York. Fry wakes up on the year 2999, where New York was already a distant place from what he knows as it is. Considering that all he wanted was a new life, Fry thinks that all of what happened was a start of something new in his life – new opportunities, new job, and new life.

After his reawakening, Philip finds himself employed as a delivery boy again. And with the new civilization and technology in the year he is at, a chip is inoculated to everyone to attach their occupation with their identity. I think Futurama shows a future that portrays a world where there is orderliness and advancement in the field of technology. It shows a world where people are obliged to follow the rules and they have no control over their situation. It depicts a world where life is no longer valued, thus neglecting the natural phenomenon of the occurrence of people and all living matter. We may say that this new civilization is a beauty, a more forward and a more competitive one, but on its contrary, machines completely dominate the people, and dissatisfaction follows. What happens in the near distant future as shown in Futurama can be quietly observed nowadays. Let’s just say, we don’t want to do this, but we are highly compelled because of survival, because of money, of love, of family and because of selfishness. We usually end up following what are on the trend list because of jealousy and selfishness. Philip, Leela and Bender on the other hand chose to take that unwarranted route.

Futurama is a science fiction film, but if we dig deeper to its meanings and context clues, we can say that it clearly depicts that for science to grow fast and approach a different scheme of understanding, learning and living, it must consider the capability and capacity of people to cope up with it.

Futurama Reaction Paper

Futurama is an animated science fiction sitcom with the concepts of the future and time travelling. The story involves a 25-year-old pizza delivery boy in New York whose name is Phillip Fry. He accidentally freezes himself on the New Year’s Eve of 1999 and defrosts and wakes up after a thousand years.
The machine that was used for Fry makes its concept of time travel different of the usual ones. Our usual idea of time machines and time travelling is being warped through different dimensions ending up in the future world. However, the story gives the idea of preserving one’s body for a very long period of time until he reaches his desired future time.
Fry was able to conclude that he is in the future setting as his first glimpse from the window is very different from that of a thousand years ago. There are already flying vehicles, robots and aliens. Transportation tubes that can transfer a person from one place to another distant place with just the matter of seconds are also available in that setting. Even booth suicides exist in their place. There are things that are already pre-determined and even assigned especially one’s fate and permanent career. Technology is really advanced that impossible things were made possible in its setting.
In the story, Fry is taken to a fate assignment officer named Leela who is a female alien with one eye. Leela tells him that his computer-determined career is a delivery boy. He refuses to be implanted with the permanent career chip, runs away and flees into the city. He then meets Bender, an alcohol-powdered bending robot. This robot is different from the usual idea. Bender has very human flaws who seems to feel what a normal human does and is actually addicted to liquor and cigarettes just like other humans.

Fry undergoes in many things but still ends up a delivery boy. However, he’s not just a pizza delivery boy in New York. He already does an intergalactic delivery.

Futurama Reaction Paper

The great thing about being cryogenically frozen on New Year's Eve when your life sucks is --boom! you wake up in The Future. Well, Phillip Fry just, technically, slept through at least two alien invasions within 1000 years. The alien invasions demolished old buildings and earthlings just built new ones. They found new societies whose towers we see being built and destroyed. Devastation and development followed each other. Just like in sci-fi novels, but with a ray of hope that humans will somehow re-build and improve what once was. To a certain degree, this shows humanity's core greatness, that is, we thrive after we survive.

Is the Future just like in Star Trek? For the most part, yes. The technology has advanced, and so do the system of living. They have a strict way of being in a "permanent" job where one's place in the social structure is determined by other people. "You gotta do what you gotta do." It sounds just like what we have now: bureaucracy.

The planet is not only "peopled" by people but also by robots and aliens like Bender and Leela. Fry's initial pleasure when he discovers that he is in the future is also sprinkled with stupidity (actually it's more like Fry's confusion and ignorance), and loneliness. Being in the future with all its rockets and telepads do not guarantee us of happiness, after all.

It seems like there are more and more miserable (not to mention impatient) folks, too. Heck, they even have suicide booths! And telepads that land next to suicide booths!

It's quite nifty, actually. They even have a choice between "quick and painless" and "slow and horrible". Ha! The thing is, the future may have fulfilled Fry's dreams of authentic space gizmos but the future still has semblance to what we have today. Work, capitalists, pain and death still remain. And Fry resumes his job as a delivery boy.

Futurama

Futurama is an animation about Philip J. Fry from the year 1999. He has been living a not-so-good life until he tripped in an office, and got preserved for a thousand years. A diversion from the usual use of time machines which transports a body in another dimension through space and time continuum, Futuruma brought the time travelling concept through preservation of Fry’s body in a capsule, then later defrosted depending on the time setting of the machine.
After a thousand years in the capsule, Fry gains consciousness and immediately concluded that the setting is already the future – as characterized by the skyscrapers and mode of transportation through flying he has seen. The producers also added futuristic concepts such as cohabitation with aliens like Leela and automation of processes. Most uncontrollable things at present are determined already – even assigned – like Fate Assignment. Booths for suicide even existed. Robots – like Bender – also existed in the story and he seemed like he was advanced-programmed to think that he behaves the way a human usually does – with conscience.

The dominant concept in the pilot episode is ‘doing what you really want to do.’ Fry had been running from Leela after refusing getting stamped for his career hr claimed to hate. It was ironic in the end when Fry cheerfully said “I’m a delivery boy!”
